I was in South Carolina for a plein air event when all this coronavirus started.

I travel in my RV and paint around the country, so with everything being shut down, I stored my trailer and moved in with my sister and her husband on Ladys Island. Lucky for me her property is large and scenic. I've taken over a corner of her garage for a mini studio. It just so happens that her garage faces north! So I have beautiful natural light. (Did I mention that I'm lucky?) So I've been plein air painting and doing some studio work from my color sketches.

I also happen to have a "Shelter in Place", painting sale on my website. Purchasing instructions are on my sale page.

Here is the reference photo of my father in law’s 1946 GMC truck that I drew and then rendered in pen and ink and painted on an 8 x 17” gallery wrapped canvas.
I have been wanting to do this for years

Since I had cleaned and filled my kohinoor rapidograph pens with ink for Denver’s truck I decided to do another project.
I didn’t like the blah colors of my reference photo so I used another as reference for the colors.
This pen and ink is painted with DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic on a 10 x 10 back stapled canvas

I’m working on a number of boats (presently 3 finished, 3 “in process”), the number perhaps depending on the length of the pandemic, my materials supply, and the room in my garage. This one I’m tentatively calling “A Prototype for a Multi-Propelled Marine Rescue Craft.”

Greetings All,

I felt I had to do SOMETHING in honor of Earth Day, and even though I continue to have this LOVE/HATE relationship with computers, I turned to making a digital collage from a photo of solar panels. I'm calling this piece, "Solar Energy, The Fabric of Our Future"

Just when I thought I would ‘rest’ during the world of social isolation, a few things happened.

An indoor project! As a nature photographer, I’m not an indoor shooter. Since I enjoy abstract imagery, I decided to create an abstract project using paper, a glass table and a light. What fun!

I started to work on my digital artwork a little bit more. It’s something I’ve tampered with for fun, but I've used this time to focus on broadening my techniques. My subjects? My doggies and a couple of friends cats. This custom pet portrait offering will be a new addition to my Etsy shop in May.

My evening photography increased but my morning photography declined due to sleeping in, which is a rarity! Usually it’s the opposite. Evenings have been spent on hikes and walks on beaches that I’ve needed to explore more deeply.

This time has also been used to refine my photography tips blog Aperture and Light .

Lastly, as a board member at large for NAA, I’m working with NAA’s social media platforms to promote our member artists!

Hello All,

This is a miniatures diorama I created in a metal black lantern == Floor space 6 x 6 inches.

I had so much fun making it. There are cats. and bats, and spiders as well as other witchy things.

I hope you all are doing well

Other than NAA Board Secretary duties and chairperson for several events this is what I keep busy with. I do this in the evening when watching TV. I can’t just sit and do nothing so I make Bear Ornaments with petoskey stones in the hearts. It’s quite a process - finding good wool that felts properly, tracing and cutting out my pattern, ironing pattern to wool and cutting out the pieces then hand sewing each one.

I’ve also created a mandala painting for the Enchanting Night Sky event, but that will be revealed at the show.

My next project is a small sculpture of a turtle. It may be a little while before that is posted.

What better time to paint what you love! I sure had fun with this new still life affectionately called "Lion and Bear", 9x12, soft pastel. I have had them for many years, and they now watch over me in the studio. I find them to be very comforting, and I was definitely in my happy place during the painting process. I hope they make you happy too. The progress shots include the block-in, determining the key of light, adding the local color, finished painting. Additional paintings can be viewed on my website: https://barbarareich.com

The human figure has drawn my attention. Between pet portraits I try to squeeze in different paintings featureing human thought and different techniques.
