As a young artist in high school and college, one of Linda Bayer’s favorite methods of drawing was Pointillism. She did this with a pencil or fine tip marker and created black and white pictures out of millions of dots. She finds it was natural for her to be interested in mandalas.

She hasn’t been doing mandalas for very long. It started in 2019 when the Northport Arts Association (NAA) had a fundraising exhibit called Tables at the Tip of Leelanau Peninsula. Artists found old tables of all sorts, cleaned them up, painted them in various ways and donated their work to the NAA to sell in the exhibit.

Bayer felt we needed something smaller in the exhibit and came up with serving trays. Then, while looking for ideas on how to paint the trays, she came across mandalas and was intrigued. She watched YouTube videos of artists sharing their techniques and tools and decided “I can do this”.

The creation of the mandalas is relaxing for her, and she loves to see the design grow and develop using color, form and dotting techniques.

Psychologist Carl Gustave Jung was one of the first people to introduce the creation of mandalas as a technique to help in relaxation and more.
